![]() More confident and exuberant-feeling tracks boost the project from one section to the next while comparatively more difficult ones such as “Do Better”, challenge the upbeat moods of the record in such a way that not only gives it balance but also shows an emotional range that is surely appropriate for all that the artist has been through. Rather, for the most part, the flow of “Herbert” feels natural. Regardless of what songs materialized when, this album does not feel like a mix of different ideas and feelings bundled together into one loose package. While many of the songs on his newest album were said to have been recorded during these difficult times, some also came during a time of relative relief for the rapper. Nevertheless, this early leg of Soul’s career by no means explains his full story, one that is remarkable and that his newest effort “Herbert” shows he is all but finished telling.Īb-Soul has stated that in the time leading up to “Herbert” he experienced heavy bouts of mental ailments such as depression and other internal struggles that brought him to his very breaking point. This time period was pivotal in the rapper’s career and has been dissected both in regards to his singularity as a musician as well as his role in TDE’s rise alongside prominent artists such as ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock and, of course, Kendrick Lamar. “The Book of Soul”, one particularly important song off Soul’s debut told the rapper’s story with both eloquence and grit while other tracks like “Pineal Gland” and “Terrorist Threats” showed him in the thick of his trademark fascination with the human conscious, experimental use of psychedelic drugs and an all-around unwillingness to conform to the status quo. The latter was Soul’s debut album, which he released via Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) around a time when the independent label was gathering some of its best early talent. These attributes have been prominently showcased on his outside the box projects such as “Long Term Mentality” and, most notably, “Control System”. Songs like hunnid stax, Just Have Fun, and K-Dots Interlude make up for some lost ground but in total it is a muddy mess of an album.Ab-Soul has long held a reputation in Hip-Hop for being an abundantly mindful and highly introspective artist. You have the closing track which just rambles for a near half an hour, songs such as Twact and Nevermind that, which repeat the same wack lines over and over again. This project is just super inconsistent, and although there are quality songs on it, listening to the entire album isn't that enjoyable. ![]() He was still developing his songwriting ability. Most of the songs are just choruses repeated. This project had better beat selection then the other Mixtape, but Ab Soul really doesn't rap to his full capability on this project. I recommend those two songs as well as studio life and gutter. This Mixtape is really really raw but the two aforementioned songs make it a good listen. But the beats where really inconsistent and some drown out his verses. Ex songs like 100 yard dash and A Day In The Life. This Mixtape had some really intricate displays of lyricism. There isn't a lot to complain about on this album (moscato maybe) but it's really solid. An example of this was loosen my tie and constipation. The beat choice is jazzy and Ab Soul really flows well over some of the beats. This album, was solid through and through. A Huge fan of the production, the sample choices and the instrumentation was really unique to this album. A great album, there are a couple tracks that I am not crazy about, but I was shocked that this album only had average reviews when it came out. As well as societies overall treatment to the lower classes. ![]() This album poses questions on the origins of man and the origins of the universe. Incorporating elements of mysticism, eastern religions, Alistir Crowleys philosophies, and feminism. In this way it is one of the most personal albums ever to be recorded. Because of all this, this album gives you a glimpse into the mind of the artist in a way that almost no other can do. As well as dealing with the death of loved ones and looking at your own mortality in the wake of this. Topics range from Drug legalization, the origin of man, literal and figurative mind control, secret societies, police brutality, American corruption, etc. This album is Ab at not only his most personal. Please feel free to have your own ranking.Ī truly amazing album, I think it has potential to become a classic in the future. ![]() After listening through every Ab Soul project in a row.
